The activities were carried out as per our work plan with AMREF (MAANISHA) fund which was clearly targeting COMMERCIAL SEX WORKERS, LONG TRUCK DRIVERS,BAR MAIDS and MIRAA DWELLERS. As IYAP counsellors went on with HIV counselling and testing others decided to take responsibility and made mobilization by entertaining the crowd and also feeding them with vital information on HIV and AIDS.
The session was well despite some usual ups and downs e.g disturbance from, street children making alot of noise while the session goes on,drunkards who demands to be tested under influence, strong winds that almost carry away our small testing tents.

IYAP wants to acknowledge the support from maanisha which has been one of the leading and credible organizations in bringing the real change to this community..
The number of client seen and attended to were convincing hence declared the activity productive. Coupled with this is climatic condition that is highly limiting on agricultural productions. Diseases and poor health conditions are prominent features of this region that is also regarded as to factors challenging IYAPs effort in reducing relief relience by the local communities living in Isiolo, indeed, there is HIV/AIDS prevalence among the pastoral communities and AIDS is one of the leading cause of death in the area.
Furthermore, caught in the endless food insecurity and poverty the entire population of Isiolo district is vulnerable to HIV/AIDS. The families in the district are in poor health conditions and HIV/AIDS prevalence among the population is estimated at around 11% of the population. Who are HIV/AIDS clients? IYAP is trying to come up with some options for the school caregivers through a kitchen garden projects for the small farmer who have some portions of land along the river banks while others rent little lands on degraded soils, the pastoralist were neglected for many years, the urban poor lives with few livelihood options and opportunities.this projects which was pioneered by GRACE AFRICA was of great assistance for them before the drougt strikes the region, Also they are women who disproportionately produce food on substance level and the children for whom HIV/AIDS and hunger means lasting and permanent physical and cognitive damages.
the picture show the community practicing farming at IYAP ECD gardens before all their crops perished by the sudden drought.
IYAP is looking for the way forward to a longing solution.Jamalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14025260231426631986noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2944625137626523421.post-82223910103951409152010-09-22T12:58:00.000-07:002010-09-22T13:11:50.601-07:00THE BUSKET OF FRUITS!!!!<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhLIcGeyD3-rzLm5g3Tx8Vg0n7HaZgS8saOt0HA_i8VywYrwgOxsYa-FhsvVqd3KZpmeLnYmpqEsYItnNUlerVog7JO9pCX2gDvLbwrPYUxmux7WX74Qi2WP-7zQYerZ1KepY_iyw1On-Q/s320/DSC06333.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5519832820707262082" />
Special kids needs special attention, since the inception of the ECD-Programme IYAP has been lucky to attract local and international visitors, this is a blessings and a symbol of care and love according to most of the AFRICAN culture, dispite the great nutritional support from GRACE AFRICA the two volunteers from GERMANY one Rudolf Steiner institute Kassel , decided to put a smile on the face of this little kids by taking responsibility and stage a series of presentation about the school with the aim of mobilizing resources(funds) to add an extra step in supporting the purchase of the fruits for this little angels to grow healthy and take a lead in future, the fruits being enriched with many important vitamins, is indispensable for anumber of vital activities within the children’s body, beside being loved for their delightful tase. So this assistance will assures theres crutial growth and good development, again as an organization that is very sensitive on the health issues, the fruit provides vitamin A and B5 which not only help our bone and teeth grow strong but also stimulates immune system.. this is mostly found in oranges/water melons amongst other fruits, also banana for vitamin B1 which converse carbohydrates into energy and B3 for smooth growing and operation of digestive and nervous system, and healthy skin for children.
For this and more reasons IYAP want to acknowledge the organizers Magdalena Pfirrmann and Almut Slezak for this noble course with the school video set from Christian Slezak, also Klaus Ulex,Marcus stettner and many other citizens who joined their hands in support of this school.
May u live to achieve all your desired dreams....... feel loved.Jamalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14025260231426631986noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2944625137626523421.post-12810588489340002322010-09-20T12:34:00.000-07:002010-09-20T13:46:33.450-07:00IN ISIOLO SOUTH<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgDDFJobJ9__M9i6KX9zI3Zm6Xhd6ZB69zC02uG7sexGjEpDEA3sNqYYsMuIA3UH5pq17zWLh5gIwV9MGgAFBOtsj6BgqbXAEwc7KrF64y3xJXOhu33SXtxwvpRAhrwPWjdsmsyCrI7C2M/s320/Image014.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5519099285023294290" />
it has been our dream and wish to be in this part of isiolo, if not thrice then twice every year, then we had a clear opportunity after our site incharge received a phone call that invited us for a four days mobile services by a very hard working GIRISA WOMEN GROUP who benifitted from TOWA,NACC FUND(Total War Against AIDS, the journey was abit tidious and scaring driving through bushy, dusty and rough road. most of all the road is prone to banditary attacks since kenya got its indipendence..
on our way we experienced, two punctures hence had to stop and relax as the driver and his crews fix the tires,
In the process me and my three coligues pauseD some questions to some old guards taravelling with us on their take on testing and counseling, this was so interesting since some guys thought that HIV is just a myth and no one ever died of it! this gave us un opportunity for debate which brought some sense after long discussion.. by arriving at our destination we visited a video place where the host had already organised for a meeting, we then converse on Behavior Change Communication with around 20 to 25 youths, the subject was so open that made the discussion so hot and informative, then here most of the people decided that its important for them to know their status and practice safer and safe sex with their partners..
the following day we pitched our tent and use also other room for testing and counseling,we received some clients after Friday prayers where the Imam(prayer leader) talked at long about HIV and AIDS in his preach. the number was convincing hence gave a room for sure change among the KULAMAWE community...bravo TOWA, bravo GIRISA, bravo IYAP and kulamawe community at large..Jamalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14025260231426631986noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2944625137626523421.post-12072725068786389192010-09-15T03:49:00.000-07:002010-09-15T12:00:44.311-07:00SUPPORT FROM MAANISHA..SUCCESS STORY

It was on mid march when we were carrying out a community outreach(mobile CT) at BULLA PESA when one of our HCT PROVIDER came accross a poorly dressed man who claimed to be 29yrs old but acording to the his physical look the guy seemed to be in his late 30,s. The guy looked to be very confused and worried about the decision he was about to make, from the look of his face he was suffering from a weeks hungover... “every one is looking at me as if am a stranger from another planet, i mean the furthest one i dont know may be jupiter or pluto’’ the guy said.
Then as a counselor i just called the client in and asked him if i can assist where he noded as a sign of acceptance, ‘’I have been living with this virus for so long all my friends died but am still living, people are scared of me ,i have no families and friends! They believe that am a carrier, am just walking but I died some times back” and the tears started running over his cheeks while he was staring though the faded tent window. Have you ever been tasted before ? was my next question, the client told me that was not neccessary.
Then this touched me alot after realizing that this person who now happens to be my client was never tested his HIV status but now for at least two and a half years he lived knowing that he was HIV positive, Ithen decided to take the client though the normal counseling routine, where he accepted to be tested.
Waiting for the first result normally takes 15minutes and in this period i gave him all the time to aske questions and all the questions were evolving around living positively, which was so good meaning that the client is expecting any thing which will be easy to manage.. after this all his eyes are just sticked on the testing table and he couldnt listen nor hear anymore, after filling the data form the clock was on its 15th minutes and this means that i had to ask my client if his ready to take his result, this was another terrible thin that has ever happened to his life ang the guy became 100% sobber and was sweating and shiveriing as if suffering from a chronic malaria. “ yes am ready my result will say whom really I am’’. The client confidently walk to the table and stand beside the result as i was following closer, what did you see? I asked “ daktari hii ni chan’gaa siamini”. Thats true this your result an as i showed you earlier two lines means that you are HIV positive but this proves you to be HIV negative since this now only one line! The client didnt believe all this and really the result shows him to be HIV negative.
When comingup withe plan of action the client confessed that he just ruined his live and wasted alot of time for so long since he believed to be HIV infected. I promise you that this the end of my hard times, am like born again, no chang’aa in my life again and am going back to my family to tell them this good news and let all my village and neighbours should know that i know my status.. ‘’you saved my life i never get courage like this before, but its a new beginning i promise you again’’.
Believe me or not on tuersday june 22nd the client came to the our office with his wife and a three and a half years baby girl just to say thanks to what IYAP did to win back his lost HOPE! But we also thougt that most of the credit should go to AMREF MAANISHA for transforming this and many other lifes..
BRAVO AND LIVE LONG AMREFMAANISHA!!!!!!!!!!!!!Jamalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14025260231426631986noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2944625137626523421.post-23910066510351377302010-07-09T21:12:00.001-07:002010-07-09T21:12:48.943-07:00STILL UNDER RRIthe HIV Testing and Counseling this time round penetrated in to the heart of Kenya army barracks.. We also made every one remember that we are all HIV positive until proven otherwise. We then took our mobile service to tha Prison camp and managed to test over 38 warders and family, tommorrow IYAP is again taking the service there targeting the inmates/prisoner believing that with the kenyan situation right now everyday is WORLD AIDS DAY!Jamalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14025260231426631986noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2944625137626523421.post-3709909965160394272009-11-25T21:04:00.000-08:002010-06-19T13:26:10.220-07:00New Programme<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEizc_gfMf1Wd8B7LkFrqBoJVCDZQNFoBYaU4Vlyj083Z9W5iTFIt1RDc1N6H9pLj1KM9UY0OLwmbuT5myNthTfBOojc7z65M-00FdPT1gXvCT7olXxjmlmNKiXMuWcTDWu-V0GhL_s0hcQ/s320/DSC04400.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5484582727837637298" />
Isiolo Youth against Aids and Poverty(IYAP) is now ready to launch a new programme for Orphaned children in the central division, the project will be known as IYAP Early Child Development.
This will be a learning centre for children below six(6) yrs of age who are orpans and living their care givers. Most of the time IYAP tends to be taking the service without doing prior mobilization believing that every day is world AIDS day and any time with or without prior mobilization people should be ready to sacrifice their precious 30 to 35minutes for what will determine their future life.
We therefore arrived at “maili saba” well packed and ready for the day’s session, we were suddenly surrounded by curious wananchi who wanted to know what we are having for them, at first many associated the tent pitching with the famous polio campaign the onlookers were busy relating the government van we were using with the said campaign.
Compliments to our mobilizers whom within a very short period managed to pitch all the tents while others set the public address system despite the falling of rain. We then introduced our self to the village elder and area Chief who promised to support the course in mobilizing the community, little by little the clients then started booking in the flow then increased to be larger number despite our late coming and a short notice, this one of the interesting places with its style, it’s amazing since the clients were arguing on whom will be tested fast, such things are mostly seen when conducting Moon light services.
By the time of closure we have already attended 68 clients .This was good for the day’s target that was set to at least hit 70 and above clients per day, the second day we came a bit earlier than previous day but managed to test 62 clients, third day was the climax day where we counseled and tested 79 clients, bearing in mind that there are some counselors/counselor who is left to man the standalone site which was also performing at its best.

LESSON LEARNT
-With good cooperation you can achieve a lot.

CHALLENGES
-time extension due to the most of the community members whom mostly works as farmers who are busy preparing for this rainy season.Jamalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14025260231426631986noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2944625137626523421.post-6436584146346125672009-10-12T22:22:00.001-07:002009-10-12T22:22:52.237-07:00INTO THE HEART OF OUR VILLAGE!!On 10/10/09 was a one special day when members of IYAP answered a call from a friend youth organization who are having a programme of initiating culture of peace in our society.
Thiz an ad-hock advantage and IYAP exactly knows how to utilize the opportunity.. Our few counselors and mobilizers arrived at the sight at 8:30 am and managed to erect all the tents and set the tents by 9:00am.
They didnt set tha public address system which are very powerful and may lead to disrupt the other ongoing proggramme, women groups, youths, and old guards were all there celebrating and chanting peace slogans.. In the proccess the mobilization team from IYAP did one to one mobilization. People started picking slowly gain confidence and after the test they also joined in mobilizing others. Thiz waz very encouraging since at tha end of the peace programme we set our public address system and people are still gathering along, dispite that we tested 42 new clients we also got an opportunity to give right and update information HIV and AIDS and collecting views from them.
All the 42 tested were negative this was very encouraging since we discussed on how to maintain that status and reffered for ongoing counseling. Bravo Bulla Bao village.

CHALLENGES:
-most of the married women didnt want to be tested there since it may create suspicious from their husbands.
-condom uptake was very low.
-loud music an curious people peeping through the tent as the session procceeds.Jamalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14025260231426631986noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2944625137626523421.post-38463979767285638592009-10-07T21:47:00.000-07:002009-10-11T21:53:28.495-07:00ACTIVITY REPORT FOR THE MONTH SEPTEMBER.<img style="float:center; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEirXmpbdZAlmLog6bvu102ua2iREuZ_v7dqI3uPb-ZVxK_zc_GnucEJfUe6_rpNbYPkbIVZMR_-LmlnBZAmi3RP3reWq_mIHpNGcrXuCysOzCw3LtlrHIPXyOILc9QCTeZ_l8dE-s-jwCQ/s320/DSC02006.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5390091766223489026" />

ISIOLO YOUTH AGAINST AIDS AND POVERTY In collaboration with the Kenyan Ministry of Health undertook the following activities:

THE MAIN ACTIVITIES WERE:-

• Taking counseling and testing services to three villages
• Community mobilization and sensitization.

Community mobilization;

The mobilization team visited the three villages to mobilize the locals to take advantage of mobile testing and counseling services which will be coming the following day to their village. This was done well and the outcome was satisfactory.

Mobilization;

This was carried out by use of different strategy such as :-

• Community involvement to air their views, questions and concerns which arose from stage drama.
• One to one.
• Use of public address system.

COUNSELLING AND TESTING.

The services of counseling and testing were taken to the different villages and the most important place was when we organized and took the service to the Administration police camp. This was done with the intention of targeting couples, here our timing wasn’t that successful since some minutes before our arrival the police were leaving the camp for an emergency duty caused by insecurity issue going on.

-In kambi juu we managed to test a convincing number of clients; this was so special since the women group that requested us to bring them the services tested 86%, while others promised to be tested later since they at that time claimed to be having an important duty to perform at home.
-At maendeleo and Total stage in town was so encouraging since the turn up was the highest number of clients realized after twice extending the mobile to moonlight service.

ACHIEVEMENT

• Majority of those reached were testing for the first time.
• For the client tested positive referrals were made to access early management of HIV.
• Some clients promised to completely change their behavior after knowledge of their status for the first time.
• 5 out of 6 mobiles process was supported by other donor on this month beside Liverpool.
• The service demand is rising up.

CHALLENGES

• Poor mode of transportation during outreach.
• Tension in community due to insecurity reason.
• Long chain of command in some learning institution.
• Unpredictable rain that sometimes fall suddenly cutting short the activity.

SUMMERY REPORT IN NUMBER.

Male counseled =314. Which is not effective when focusing in best and fast services provision.Jamalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14025260231426631986noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2944625137626523421.post-8936151440811112862009-09-21T22:24:00.001-07:002009-09-22T09:13:48.756-07:00BACK ON TRACK!It has been a very busy week for IYAP members whom, despite fasting and many other relegious responsibilities, achieved worthy things.

I think IYAP made great strides in reversing negative STI (Sexually Transmitted Infection) indicators.

On the illicit businesses that were taking place in tha villages, they will soon be reduced, the area chief promised us.

During the past weeks the client turn up has been drastically rising, one of the influencing factors being great fear over condom safety. Most of the clients' fears are based on condoms, regardless of the type. This tells us how careful most people wants to be.

Up to now we have tested many but for more details you will need to check out our combined monthly summary report.

CHALLENGES
-clients have lost confidence in condoms.
-drug abuse and substance among the clients.
-heavy rain that cut our work short.
-weak tents unable to resist strong wind.
-using handcarts as means of transportation.Jamalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14025260231426631986noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2944625137626523421.post-71179898830938961482009-09-10T22:59:00.000-07:002009-09-13T07:19:47.923-07:00The Bullet that Wounded IYAP's Project!Living in peace and harmony is what all human beings want in life, inluding you and me...

Isiolo being one of the places recently affected by violence is slowly sinking without getting any attention from the Government of Kenya.

IYAP recently conducted a peace meeting inclusive of women and youths. We believe these are the most directly affected group. There is alot of hatred caused by fighting over the resources among the communities living in isiolo. What goods are we inheriting from our parents? Completely nothing but hatred.

What is the perception of the community when all the killings and other impunities is taking place right at the big eyes of the goverment which according to the locals, it only focuses on the first class citizens. If 5 people die in Nairobi,Rift valley or central, its most likely that you face the I.C.C. If dozens die in Isiolo, Samburu, Leisamis, Marsabit, Moyale and even North Eastern, no one cares.

IYAP is fighting against poverty, which will help the goverment in the realization of MDG 1 (Millennium Development Goal 1, to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger). We stocked Matendo Women's Group with 315 white goats whereby social services added 15 goats. The women then were empowered and gained confidence in life and even had a burgaining power in their marriage homes.

Then the number of goats increased to over 650 before being driven away by 26 armed bandits after killing the old man looking after them. It is now so embarassing that after the members followed up the matter and saw where the goats were, they only managed to recover 26 of them while 624 were still in the thin air.

The District Commissioner and the area chief promised the members that the goats will be returned soon. But it is now a month and the goats are yet to be recovered.

Who will help to bring justice to prevail for the shot old man, for MATENDO WOMEN GROUP,their children and for the 12 orphans who have been depending on those goats for milk and school fees? They are bleeding, hurting and confused. We are then affected too as this was one of our projects.

Our meeting ended prematurely after some of the women member shaded tears when the discussion was on and no head of local administration appeared.Jamalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14025260231426631986noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2944625137626523421.post-83568410429940394392009-09-09T12:40:00.001-07:002009-09-09T22:10:26.657-07:00Sitting on a time bomb?We are having our normal routine meeting which is always done once per month with the aim of assisting each other. In the meeting we usually discuss a lot of issues that have arisen after the previous support meeting. In the proccess the counselors are very careful on client confedentiality not to be compromised in the process.

The issue that took up most of our time was concerning condoms, specifically male condoms. It may be a nightmare when a person you most depend on at difficult times confidently stands and gives you information that may be right according to what he/she believes in, but later cost you a life.

This what is likely to happen if our Government agency, KEBS (Kenya Bureau of Standards) does not take extra care with the report that questions condom quality. It was at this meeting before the media release that we put a question mark over condom safety. It is the main prevention method being championed by our organization, but of late, there have been reports of burst and damaged condoms.

Our clients have good information on correct use of condom hence we can rule out storage and validity/expiration date as the cause of burst condoms. Condoms are an expensive product. We therefore challenge KEBS to give priority to this, to take charge and act, otherwise it may be too late for us all giving right information with wrong tools.Jamalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14025260231426631986noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2944625137626523421.post-21500299109895488872009-09-03T02:29:00.001-07:002009-09-03T02:29:39.696-07:00Summary report for august. The activity of the month of august comenced well despite some few challenges, despite having a target of 500 clients per month IYAP is again very mindful on the quality of the service offered.. The point was to target the members from the Muslim community. At first as we were setting the tents it attracted most of the people around who confused the place with the ongoing population counting (census).
The mobilizers then took most of their time to welcome all to this crucial exercise while giving information on HIV basic facts. The client flow was good bearing in mind this was the first service of its kind at the area.
The prevalence rate of Muslim dominated areas has been known to be low, which may be caused by low VCT up take.
We enjoyed the day which we took as a learning process and an avenue to collect views and the community perception about this service. We therefore took an advantage to stratagise ourselves on the basis of collected information which will assist to go back in full swing.

CHALLENGES
-most of the community are fasting hence thought pricking (to draw blood for testing) will break their fast.
-most women were at home preparing for the family evening meals.Jamalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14025260231426631986noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2944625137626523421.post-21291440333416630582009-08-25T12:22:00.001-07:002009-08-25T22:56:46.171-07:00Mobile VCT at Millenium petrol station.IYAP members met very early in the morning and performed their morning rounds; this is where all the members share their feelings on their night experience, concerns, fears and expectation for the day.
A counselor and a receptionist were then selected to remain behind for the standalone site to be functional while others will be leaving for mobile outreach.
PT (Panel Test) was then done by one counselor where the sample report was then sent to Nairobi by site in charge for the purpose of Quality Assurance.
We then proceeded to the identified site where the client flow was low despite the effort made by mobilization team in mobilizing the people around the surrounding area. Anyway we managed to test and counsel at most 24 clients despite our set target of 100 clients.
We all then went back to the office to conduct the closing rounds for the day and get an overview and members' experiences.

CHALLENGES
-performing counseling, testing and mobilization while fasting.
-Strong wind and dust.
-Poor means of transportation.Jamalhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14025260231426631986noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2944625137626523421.post-52032210600748286482009-08-25T01:41:00.000-07:002009-08-25T01:50:37.786-07:00IYAP Kenya's New Website<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfNtlavc7hhfTWXsHnDNJ3ViyNddJhswDg2WAkme_bUV6LfZJchp1SIJpfvSfCTpnKiLsQkOBDRL-h4VfKZFwERPlk4XlfZJThz0-leNTBBO6VUhsmrDR7l5fYlUTICXeayv3BzL8_7YU/s320/iyap+dust.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5373820078928057730" />

Photo: Last week's mobile VCT clinics took place despite constant wind and dust.

Just a quick announcement: IYAP Kenya's new website is now online.
